“For fifty years, our family has been known for producing delicious smoked fish such as nova and whitefish, but we’re always evolving, making different types of smoked seafood that meet the changing needs of our customers and the tastes of consumers,” Acme president, Eric Caslow, said. “That’s why we’re expanding our wild salmon and specialty smoked fish offerings while continuing to produce the ‘flagship’ products for which we are widely known."
Mr. Caslow noted that sales of smoked fish have been increasing in recent years, a trend he said could be attributable to the popularity of high protein diets and consumer awareness about the health benefits of eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids.
Acme Smoked Fish Corp. – A Family Business and a Family Tradition
Acme Smoked Fish Corp. was founded by Harry Brownstein, who, after emigrating to the U.S. from Russia in the early 1900s, found employment in the smoked fish business as a wagon jobber. Harry purchased fresh, hot smoked fish from smokehouses in his horse-drawn wagon and hand-delivered them to small grocery and appetizing stores. Eventually, through hard work and dedication, Harry achieved his dream of owning a smokehouse.
This year, Acme Smoked Fish Corp. marks five decades as a family owned and operated smokehouse. Still based in Brooklyn, NY, the company is managed by Harry’s grandsons, Eric and Robert Caslow, and the fourth generation, Eric's son David and Robert’s daughter, Emily, are now following in the footsteps first cast by their great grandfather.
Just as wagon jobbers no longer peddle smoked fish door-to-door, Acme has responded to market demands by modernizing its Brooklyn factory, dramatically increasing production capabilities and expanding its regional sales teams nationwide.
In 2000, the company launched the Blue Hill Bay Smoked Seafood product line, comprised of all-natural and preservative-free smoked fish ranging from plain and flavored salmon to brook trout, tuna and more.
Acme Smoked Fish Corporation, located at 30 Gem Street in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, is now one of the largest single-plant processors of smoked fish and herring in the United States, and it is still family-owned and operated.
